WELCOME TO ISLAND CHARM

Island Charm was founded by a native Rhode Islander with the idea that we all desire to become just a tiny part of those one-of-a-kind island stories.  After we have our island experience, we want to bring some kind of memento home from our time “on island.”  Rhode Island, the smallest state, has over thirty of these charming islands. Aquidnick Island, the largest in Narragansett Bay, is home to Newport, the sailing capital of the world.  Next, there is Block Island about thirteen miles off the coast.  Both Newport and Block Island are well-known tourist destinations, but Rhode Island has many more alluring islands dotting the beautiful Narragansett Bay that often get overlooked.

Take Prudence Island. A year after Roger Williams established the settlement of Providence on Narragansett Bay, in 1637, he purchased Prudence Island. Shortly after, he acquired Patience Island. Hope Island was believed to be a gift to Roger Williams from Chief Miantonomi of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. These are just a few of the many picturesque islands in the Narragansett Bay.

A charming Colonial children’s poem helps us get to know the islands in the Narragansett Bay:

Prudence, Patience, Hope and Despair. And Little Hog Island over there — Colonial children’s poem

We’ve all heard the expression, “island charm.” For sure, the concept conjures up feelings of exhaling and finding relief from the day-to-day stressors of mainland life. Islands have always been alluring spots for visitors to recharge, relax, rest, and rejuvenate.  From escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life, to exploring nature, to meeting the locals, to seeking adventure, every island has distinguishing features that offer memorable experiences for travelers and seafarers. Perhaps what is most charming about islands is their unique, storied histories and the magical pasts that draw us in and make us want to be part of their on-going tales.
